About Us

Research at IIESL

We generate, debate, and disseminate critical, interdisciplinary research on inclusive economies and sustainable livelihoods, including through research on local and regional economic development by the IIESL Director and our postdoctoral fellows; engagement with visiting scholars, who bring international perspectives on community wealth-building and institutional change; research collaborations with other U of T scholars and centres; discussions and new book events on campus; and our Inclusive Economies Working Group.

Research collaborations

We undertake several collaborations with researchers, faculty and institutes across UofT, including:

Towards Place-Based Approaches to Inclusive Economies

At IIESL, we are working on place-based frameworks that reclaim inclusion as a tool for transformative change, economic justice, and democratic possibility. We do so by cultivating and facilitating international collaborative partnerships that bring together different disciplines and forms of knowledge as well as government, community-led organizations, non-profits and international agencies. We aim to provide valuable analysis and resources for researchers, teachers, policymakers, planners, and community organizers interested in promoting inclusive economies in Toronto and around the world.

Researchers and community-based partners from five cities have partnered to shift common practices of how stories about successful urban change are told, and who tells them.

Automating Extraction: The socio-material impacts of AI-driven material discovery

As the world shifts to renewable energies, there is growing demand for minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These minerals are often mined in ways that harm the environment and local communities. Self-Driving Labs (SDLs) are being promoted as tools that can speed up the discovery of alternative materials and reduce reliance on scarce resources. But this shift also raises big questions: Who controls these new technologies? How do they change the work of scientists? And what are the wider impacts on supply chains, global power, and resource governance?

Cycling Economies: Mapping livelihoods and economic worlds around the bicycle in Bogotá

While cycling is widely recognized for its contributions to mobility, health, and sustainability, its economic dimensions remain underexplored. This project investigates the diverse economic worlds and livelihoods that revolve around the bicycle in Bogotá, Colombia – the city with the highest bicycle commuting rate in Latin America and home to the world’s largest Open Streets event, the Ciclovía.

Inclusive Economies Working Group

Along with the Centre for Learning, Social Economy & Work at OISE, we host a working group devoted to reading and discussing recent research and works-in-progress on economic paradigms rooted in inclusion, justice and place-based approaches. Working Group members propose recently published research – either their own, or works by others that they find inspiring – as well as works-in-progress for discussion.
